Building Inspector

Building Inspector – Oconto, WI (pop. 4,500), located on the Oconto River 30 minutes north of Green Bay, has a current opening for the position of Building Inspector. This position is a full-time, salaried position, working 40 hours per week.  Hours are generally 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with occasional evening and early-morning hours required.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: issuing of building permits as allowable under municipal ordinance and state statutes, inspections of residential and commercial construction, HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, property maintenance inspections for alleged violations of municipal codes and state statutes, enforcement of zoning and property maintenance codes and other related ordinances.

Minimum qualifications include: strong communication skills, considerable construction and/or building inspection experience, possess Wisconsin UDC and/or commercial certifications for construction, HVAC, electrical, and/or plumbing, or be able to obtain the required certifications within an agreed upon period.  Candidates must possess a Wisconsin driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record. Must be able to pass background check.

Fall Loose Leaf Collection


City of Oconto

The city of Oconto Department of Public Works will begin its fall curbside collection of leaves and garden waste on Monday, October 17th, 2016. Collection will continue to November 18th, 2016. This material should be placed at the curb in separate piles. Leaves should be in a row no more than 4 feet wide and approximately 3 feet high. Leaves should be placed in open areas and not around obstacles such as street signs or trees or will not be picked up. Bagged material or mixed material will not be picked up.

Do not put leaves into the street. Place the leaves between the curb and the sidewalk and as close to the curb as possible. Leaves placed on the street will not be picked-up unless placed back in the area defined for proper pick-up. Brush cannot be mixed in with leaf piles.

Residents may also bring their loose leaves and garden waste to the City’s yard waste site, which is located at 1616 Main St.

It is not possible to accurately tell residents the exact day their leaves and garden wastes will be picked up.

Washington Street Construction Project

Construction on Washington Street, from Superior Avenue to Arbutus Avenue will begin on Monday, September 12, 2016. Washington Street will be closed to through traffic (only open to residents and emergency vehicles) for the duration of the project, which is expected to be complete by the end of October. Please see the attached map for detour instructions. Questions may be directed to City Hall at (920)834-7711.


Job Opening – Patrol Officer

Oconto Police Department is currently taking applications for and immediate full-time police officer position and also to establish an eligibility list. All applicants must have a driver’s license, good driving record, be in good physical condition, have a High School diploma and a minimum of 60 college credits. Must have eligibility for Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification. A Psychological profile, Medical Examination, Drug Screen and Physical fitness/agility screening will be conducted. Residency required to 15 miles from the city of Oconto within 18 months of hire. The City of Oconto offers an excellent benefits package. Oconto Youth Football Sign-Up

Sign-up for Oconto Youth Football will be on:

Tuesday, August 9

Thursday, August 11; and

Monday, August 15

from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Sign-up will take place at the blue football sheds located behind the softball field at Oconto High School.

Flag football sign-up is for boys and girls entering 1st through 3rd grad and tackle football sign-up is for 4th through 6th grade.  If we have enough sign-ups for each grade, each grade will have its own team for tackle football.

The cost is $20 for flag, $40 for tackle and $55 for families with more than one child playing.
