🚨 ALERT: SPAM EMAILS CLAIMING TO BE FROM THE MAYOR 🚨

09/18/2024

Dear residents,

We’ve been made aware of spam emails circulating that falsely claim to be from the Mayor’s office. These emails may request personal information or contain suspicious links.

⚠️ DO NOT respond or click on any links if you receive these emails.

ALWAYS verify any official communication by contacting City Hall directly if you are unsure.

🛡️ STAY vigilant and aware of suspicious emails.

Your security is our priority. Let’s keep our community safe!

When checking for suspicious or spam emails, here are a few key things to look out for:

1. Sender’s Email Address:

  • Check if the email address matches the official email domain (e.g., @cityofocontowi.gov). Scammers may use similar-looking email addresses with slight changes, like @cityname.com or extra characters.

2. Urgency or Threatening Language:

  • Emails that demand immediate action, request sensitive information, or threaten consequences if you don’t comply are often signs of scams.

3. Unusual Requests:

  • Be cautious of emails asking for personal information (e.g., passwords, Social Security numbers), money, or financial details. Official government emails won’t make such requests.

5. Poor Grammar or Spelling:

  • Legitimate official emails are professionally written. If the email has unusual grammar mistakes or strange wording, it may be a scam.

6. Suspicious Links or Attachments:

  • Hover over any links (without clicking) to see where they lead. If the URL looks unfamiliar or suspicious, don’t click. Attachments from unknown senders can contain malware.

By staying cautious and verifying anything that seems off, you can protect yourself and others from falling victim to these scams!
