POSITION SUMMARY

This is a skilled position involving the operation and maintenance of a water supply system.  We are seeking qualified candidates that enjoy working outside, with their hands, and in a small team setting, for the essential position of Water Operator.  The position is under general supervision to perform all duties necessary for the installation and maintenance of water distribution facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES

  • Maintenance and operation of a water production and distribution system, sanitary sewer collection system and a storm water collections system.
  • Monitoring and operation of wells, hydrants and valves including data and water sample collection.
  • Performs repairs on water main breaks, service leaks and curb boxes.
  • Install water meters, cross connection inspections, perform leak detection and inspections, customer service complaint investigations and meter reading.
  • Tests and records data for meter maintenance.
  • Ability to complete locate requests.
  • Ability to use lawn mowers, snowplows, end loader, and dump trucks.
  • Ability to perform physical and manual work including lifting, pulling, climbing, standing, and walking.
  • Ability to work under various weather and working conditions including confined spaces.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the general public, board members, administration, supervisors, other City employees, construction contractors, and others.
  • Ability to take direction, facilitate communication, resolve problems, work individually and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and exercise good judgement in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability and strength to fabricate plumbing from ¾” to 12” piping, safely and repetitively lift 50 lbs. and the exertion of physical effort in water repair situations.
  • Ability to climb and descend ladders.
  • General knowledge of underground utility construction and maintenance, associated equipment, dump truck operation.
  • Private well inventory, permitting and associated documentation.
  • Complete annual maintenance on hydrants and valves.

The position also requires the employee to be frequently available for emergency response during off-shift hours as well as snow plowing.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EDUCATION

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and access to an operable and licensed vehicle.
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Commercial “Class B” Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsement, or ability to receive within 6 months of hire.
  • The candidate shall hold or have the ability to obtain OIT Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Certifications in Groundwater and Distribution within one (1) year under NR 114. 
  • Must pass a pre-employment, drug screen, and physical along with periodic testing required for the requirements of a CDL License.

SALARY RANGE: We offer a competitive compensation package ($24.50 – $28.50/hour) based upon knowledge, skills, and abilities with potential to receive additional step increases based on meeting and/or exceeding goals/expectations; annual COLA and step increases pending Utility Commission approval of budgets; and future promotional opportunities in alignment with succession and career path.
