Notice of USPS policy change on postmarks
may affect tax payment timeliness
Taxpayers who pay their property tax bills by mail need to be aware of a recent U.S. Postal Service policy change that may affect when envelopes are postmarked.
Effective December 24, 2025, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is moving the postmark process from local application to regional sorting centers.
This means your postmark could be several days after you put your payment in your mailbox.
Federal and State laws define timely payment based off the USPS postmark, meaning payments may be considered delinquent if they are mailed too close to the deadline
How can you ensure a timely tax payment?
- Mail your payment earlier than usual.
- Physically bring your payment into the post office and request they postmark your payment in front of you or by sending it via certified mail.
- Bring your payment directly into your Clerk’s office.
